Assistant Camera Workshop

Yanis Cherif started working in the production field in 2018 when he joined Northwestern University. He directed numerous commercials for a number of prestigious clients in Qatar. His passion for production led him to begin his career as an independent filmmaker working for the Doha Film Institute. Yanis has worked on 6 professional short films and 2 professional feature films, in capacity as a cinematographer, camera operator and, assistant camera.

About this workshop:

This workshop will cover the different skills required for 2nd AC work. From slating to camera reporting and setting up the monitors, all 2nd ACs will get an understanding of this comprehensive workflow. 1st ACs will also receive training on focus pulling, setting up the camera, cable management, and managing 2nd ACs. On the other hand, camera operators will receive training on proper framing and operating techniques that will help them handle the camera alongside the 1st AC.

By the end of the workshop, you will be ready to take on your AC roles and work on a student project with a professional understanding of the camera department.

‘Set Ettiquette and Hierarchy’ with Eiman Mirghani

Media Studies at the University of Nottingham, Eiman has worked on numerous short films, music videos and advertisements in the MENA region as director and producer. Eiman is the founder and senior producer of a film production house and initiative called FilmMENA, which aims to assist and elevate filmmakers and their stories from the Middle East and North African region.

About this workshop

This workshop was a crash course for first-time filmmakers who are ready to step foot into their first professional film set! This workshop took a step-by-step look at the scope of work required from all film departments, as well as the universal rules of on-set etiquette which all team members must adhere to to ensure a safe, productive, and creative environment for all!

‘Design your Film Poster’ with Hadeer Omar

Hadeer Omar currently serves as an Assistant Professor at VCUarts Qatar and is a former artist in residence at the Fire Statio program in Qatar. Her work has been showcased in Egypt, the US, Austria, France, the UK, Bulgaria, Qatar, Dubai, Russia, and Germany.

‘Acting for the camera’ with Gentë Retkoceri

Gentë Retkoceri is an Adjunct Lecturer at School of Communication, Northwestern University in Qatar. This coming May she will be obtaining her MFA degree from VCU arts in Qatar. As a multidisciplinary artist she has merged live performance and film with designs that tackle controversial topics like women’s rights to development and education of children through performing arts. She has a BA in Acting and an MA in Theater Education from Emerson College in Boston, US. She is an experienced actor in a theater and film counting more than 20 main roles over her 10 year career.

About this workshop

This workshop will allow the participants to understand the importance of ‘less is more’ when acting in a film. Through individual and group exercises each participant will be able to improve their skills as an actor, director or a screenwriter.

Directing Basics ft. Anne Woodworth

“Social Distancing” is possibly the most common phrase of 2020. How does this affect directing your actor? During this workshop, Professor Anne Woodworth will share her directing experience directing the actor pre-pandemic, during the pandemic and in hybrid mode. We will take you through the directing basics (including acting basics, dramatic structure, creating interest and building stakes).
